Teachers at Fraser Valley Elementary School are trained to deliver work in a manner developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Each grade must complete six Units of Inquiry each school year. Each Unit falls under one of the philosophies of the International Baccalaureate and these are:
♦ Who we are
♦ Where we are in place in time
♦ How we express ourselves
♦ How the world works
♦ How we organize ourselves
♦ Sharing the planet
All units consider the concept from a global perspective. This means the learning outcomes of the BC Curriculum are broadened although emphasis is always put on our community, British Columbia and Canada.
Furthermore each unit of inquiry builds upon the information the child learned the previous year. Thus, a child's knowledge is deepened as they dig deeper into their subjects. At no time will a child relearn a subject but will only increase their understanding of it.
Finally, all units of inquiry are lead by the students. Our teachers begin each unit by asking leading questions to the class such as what do you already know, what you want to find out and how does this affect us. In later grades the questions become more complex to include how these information effect events that are occurring in the world do and what is our social responsibility.
